Shading Tutorial by DragginCat Shading Tutorial by DragginCat
This tutorial is a bit outdated for I use a bit more advanced methods now. But I still use the same basic steps for the most part.

*DOWNLOAD FOR FULL VIEW*

I FINALLY got this finished. :faint: So yep, heres my first tutorial. :'D I was actually kind of reluctant to do a tutorial because half of the time I don't even know what I'm doing, but I hope some of you find this helpful. ^^ And please ignore my crappy side doodles. Its not the best tutorial and I know that there's probably a lot of better shading tutorials out there, but danggit I tried okay. D: If you find any typos or mistakes, please tell me and I'll fix it. C:

Keep in mind that this is only MY way of shading. There are a bajillion other ways to shade too, so find the one that best suits your style!

If you have any questions or if you're confused about something, don't be afraid to tell me! :D

EDIT: THIS THING ACTUALLY GOT ON THE POPULAR PAGE?? ADSFSFLSKG

So when I use the smudge tool how many times do you suggest I should go over the shaded edges

Depends how much you want it to blend ^^ It usually takes me about 5 strokes xD

Yeah usually when I do smudging on the shaded areas I do it several
times and it doesn't come out that well after

thank you for this amazing insight int shading and highlighting :)

I made a poke-creature like you from scratch to test out how I understood this tutorial and the techniques but although you make it look easy it's not that straight-forward to see in 3d and guess where the tones go and which parts should be more enveloped in light and which shouldn't

I look forward to all tutorials from you, this short one taught me more than different complicated and lengthy ones, I love your style as well :)

It almost looked like a reference to Death the Kid at the end there. xD Haha, I loved this tutorial! The humour makes it friendly, and the tutorial itself is very helpful. Expecially for people like me who like to skip out on shading the bodies. xD

I really need to learn how to shade better and this will help me greatly. I never thought of using the lines to make a sort of 3D image to get a better idea of where to shade. That is totally gonna help me out. Hopefully my next pic will look different and better than before. Thanks so much for posting this! I use Paint Tool SAI so I'm sure I can use this. Also, You is awesome!
